NT-UnixWin Integration of Unix and Windows systems

Introduction

The main goal of the course is building corporate scalable networks which are based on Unix. The items covered here are: effective and safe interaction computers on different operating systems, by means of open systems. Special attention is paid on centralized management of accounts, authentication and authorization of users. Gained knowledge at the course helps not only use the standard solutions, but also choose and use the most appropriate tools for a particular task and are more flexible, reliable and safe. The course includes a lot of practical examples and recommendations.

Audience:

Administrators of heterogeneous Unix based systems.

Prerequisites:

Before attending this course, students must have completed:

Course NT-LAdm Installing, Administering and Maintenance of Linux-systems and NT-LNet Implementing Network Infrastructure Based on Linux-systems
Or
NT-BSDAdm Administration of FreeBSD and NT-BSDNet Network infrastructure on FreeBSD

Theoretical part:

The main aspects of scalable Unix based systems:

  • Directory service and LDAP protocol
  • Module authentication in Unix by PAM
  • Distributed Kerberos authentication system
  • Combined access to file systems and printers by means of SMB/CIFS

Practical part:

The main attention is paid on means of organization of big distributed heterogeneous networks, based on Unix, including computers which works on different operation systems.
Also, the questions on cross-platform applications as well as remote access between different systems are covered here.

Main labs:

  • File/Print server Samba: Installation and configuration of file/print server on Samba 3
  • Samba client: Configuration Unix system for access to MS Windows NT/2000/2003 resources.
  • Domain Controller Samba 3: Using Samba 3 as a domain controller, for building scalable corporate network.
  • Accounts backends: Using different backends for managing accounts to get mort flexibility, effectiveness and simplicity of administering in big heterogeneous networks.
  • Module authentication in Unix: Services: Squid, Sendmail, POP3, SSH for users authentication by means of external system.
  • Kerberos: Organization distributed Kerberos authentication system
  • Directory service and LDAP protocol: Directory service organization and usage for scalable and distributed systems as an example OpenLDAP-server. Using LDAP for access to directory servers Sun ONE iDentity, Novell eDirectory and Microsoft Active directory.
  • Using Cygwin: How to make available GNU and other free tools on Windows machine.
  • Using Wine: How to run Windows programs on GNU/Linux and FreeBSD by means of Wine.
  • Remote usage of console and graphical Unix applications on Windows system and vice versa.

Software

Training is delivered on GNU/Linux FreeBSD and Microsoft Windows XP/2003.
Software which is covered on the course is:

  • Samba (http://www.samba.org)

Samba is a pack of free software which provides file and print services for SMB/CIFS clients. In combination with Kerberos and LDAP it helps to build scalable and distributed systems. It helps a host to interact with Windows clients and servers as if the server is a Windows file or print server. Samba 3 allows Kerberos authentication by means of Windows 200x KDC. This means that Samba 3 server can be a member of Active Directory domain.

  • OpenLDAP (http://www.openldap.org)

OpenLDAP is free protocol Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
OpenLDAP can be used for integration Unix and Windows and only Unix itself.

  • LAM (http://lam.sourceforge.net/)

LDAP Account Manager (LAM) is the system for management of accounts on OpenLDAP server (including Samba Users).

  • Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com)

Cygwin - is a Unix similar environment, which includes dynamically attached library, which provides Linux API functionality and Unix tools for simplicity and administration effectiveness.

  • Wine (http://www.wine.com)

Wine - is open version of Windows API over Unix, which let use import Windows applications to Unix as well as run binary versions of Windows programs on Unix machines.

  • VNC, TightVNC (http://www.realvnc.com, http://www.tightvnc.com)

VNC let us get full access to the remote desktop. TightVNC is free cross platform remote desktop access program on the basis of VNC with high security and effectiveness.

May 2005

The program on migration from SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare to Linux, IT specialists of “Express-Bank”
The series of trainings for it specialists of “Express-Bank” included series of courses of EC “Networking Technologies”™ on Linux operating system. In the training session took part Unix-systems administrators of all branches of the bank.
The main issue of the training is migration from SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare to Linux, taking into consideration that the migration should take place with the least stoppage, because the network of the bank covers all the territory of Ukraine and it should work 24/7.

June 2004

The project on providing staff with Linux technologies

EC “Networking Technologies”™ provided staff of Bank “Kyiv” with series of courses on Linux operating system. 20 persons took courses NT-LAdm Installing, Administering and Maintenance of Linux systems and NT-LNet Implementing Network Infrastructure Based on Linux systems.

July 2003

SCO OpenServer technologies for IT-specialists in Russian
Cooperation with EC “Networking Academy Lanit” (Russia). The results of the cooperation were two trainings on SCO OpenServer technologies for IT-specialists of the biggest bank in Voronezh (Russian). Instructor of Education Center «Networking Technologies»™ taught the courses.
